I’m happy to announce my landscape photo, “Mirror Reflection” which was photograph in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado was published in the July 2012 issue in Outdoor Photographer, one of the biggest nature and landscape magazines. I couldn’t be happier! I have had my shares of ups and downs since I started this career as a landscape photographer as this is not glamorous as most people imagine, but there is nothing in the world I rather do no matter how money I was offer. I believe you have to passion in what you do and it will inspire others.

I’m on the fence on this picture. Part of me really loves a lot of elements on this picture especially with the stream and wildflowers, but I just wish I had a better sky. I shot this at the first night at the San Juans Mountains in CO and I felt like a little kid in the candy store with all these wildflowers. I can’t wait to come back here next year again and I’ll definitely stay longer.

Not everyone will agree with this statement, but I believe there are no such things as an accident. I never really planned on hiking all the way to Upper Ice Lake Basin as I met another photographer while hiking up and she said that the Lower Ice Basin had a lot more wildflowers and that the upper was a flop and wasn’t worth the mile hike up and another 1000’ elevation gain. Maybe a combination of being tired and thirsty, but I missed the lower basin all together and just continued on up to the upper portion. I am really glad I did, as I wouldn’t have been able to see this sunset hidden behind all the mountain ranges. I think all the elements came together that night & I feel very fortunate to be at the right place at the right time.

The San Juan Mountains is perhaps one of the most gorgeous mountain ranges I’ve had the privilege of visiting.

I considered myself a fearless dirt bike rider, but one thing I won’t do is ride a bike that I can’t flat-foot until now. Ray, my husband, surprised me one afternoon literally just before our trip with a new & my first enduro dirt bike to our trip to the San Juan Mountains. Since I’m vertically challenge I could barely tiptoe with it which meant I had to ride the rocky, steep and technical trails praying I didn’t have to stop. Our adventure up to 12,600’ elevation Cinnamon Pass & American Basin was challenging to say the least as we were the only ones on dirt bikes and everyone else had a high clearance 4×4 Jeep. The trails were narrow and very rocky and although our dirt bikes were jetted for the high elevation, my 230 enduro dirt bike still had problems. In the back of my mind, I knew this was not smart, but I was on a mission to photograph the wildflowers and I just reminded myself that nothing in life worth doing is easy so I just got over my fear and hit full throttle on 2nd gear. I wish I could have stayed until sunset to capture this, but I knew it would be too dangerous so I settle for this shot.

This has to be one of the most difficult trails I ever hike, as I had to climb 5 miles one way with a 3000’ of elevation gain to this 12,200’ elevation lake. It took me 4 hours to hike up to the Upper Ice Lake Basin and the last mile was a grueling 1000′ of elevation gain. If I had to do this over, I would have backpack up there like I originally planned because the hike down in the dark I nearly collapsed from exhaustion. The combination of lack of sleep, air, and water made it even more difficult, but I think it is all worth it for this single snapshot alone.
